V.Smile - Educational Video for Kids

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

V.Smile was developed because kids love video games, and parents (who are the consumers) want their children to love learning.

V.Smile is an interactive TV-based learning program designed for kids aged 3 - 7.

Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System
Turn on your TV, tune in to V.Smile, and drop in to a fun educational experience! V.Smile is a learning system masquerading as a video game, just for the preschool set. A video game platform combines with educational content to create a learning system that will make preschoolers and parents alike happy. The graphics and video game aspect are a bit old-fashioned, but that's probably appropriate for youngsters just entering the world of technology. In Alphabet Park Adventure, the one included "Smartridge" game (other educational game cartridges are available, of course, sold separately), players climb to higher and higher levels of play and avoid being taken out by monsters and jungle beasts (but don't worry, it's not violent). Think Donkey Kong meets the ABCs.

V.Smile was designed specifically for children ages 3 to 7; it features non-violent, age-appropriate learning, entertaining graphics, and fun play based on popular characters such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Spider-Man, Mickey Mouse, Care Bears, Simba, Scooby-Doo, Ariel (The Little Mermaid), and more. V.Smile offers two modes of learning. The Learning Adventure is an exploratory journey in which learning concepts are discreetly integrated. The Learning Zone is a series of games designed to focus on specific school skills (vocabulary, numbers, animals, colors, directions, phonics, shapes, road safety, geography, even logic!) in a friendly, engaging way.

V.Smile features non-violent, age-appropriate learning, entertaining graphics, and fun play based on popular characters.

Easy as pie to set up, V.Smile is ready to go practically as soon as it comes out of the box. All it requires is a TV to plug into (unless your TV is older, in which case you can route it through a VCR), three C batteries, and/or an AC adapter (neither battery nor adapter is included--nor is the TV, for that matter!). The orange and purple console is fat and rounded, with a big Enter button and--lefties rejoice!--an easy-to-grip joystick that 's adjustable for left- or right-handed use. Four flashing buttons in different colors light up when selected during certain game activities. There are also help and exit buttons--self-explanatory, and a Learning Zone button--press to enter the Learning Zone play mode. A storage compartment allows players to store up to six Smartridges when not in use. A second joystick port can be used for two-player games (second joystick must be purchased separately, however).

Kids are immediately drawn in to the lively action of Alphabet Park Adventure. While the targeted developmental benefits include language development (letter names and sounds, spelling, phonics), logical thinking (basic math skills, problem solving, science facts), and cognitive development (discovery and exploration, visualization and memory, motor skills), the fact remains that, at least with Alphabet Park, players can just mess around and play the game without really learning anything earth-shattering. Just by pushing the joystick and clicking the buttons, children can advance play, even if it's by accident. Still, they are certainly working on hand-eye coordination and developing their powers of concentration and focus. If some old-fashioned Reading, Writing, and

Dora The Explorer V.Smile Smartridge
Dora the Explorer, everyone's favorite bilingual adventurer is here to help young children learn a variety of skills and concepts. With the help of Boots, her monkey sidekick, Dora teaches colors, shapes, numbers, animals, spatial skills, and problem solving. This Dora Smartridge is compatible with the V-Tech V-Smile system. In an informal test, we found the Dora games to be both challenging and entertaining for kids, particularly a game where the player must line up shapes in order to cross a bridge and one where they must follow a sequence of numbers in order to find a path across a river. --Charlie Williams

V.Smile Interactive Baby Learning Station
Engaging, expandable, and fun, the V.Smile Baby Infant Development System connects your child to a world of interactive learning. A colorful activity panel lined with a soft bumper is baby's touchable playcenter, filled with colorful shapes, a rolling ball, and jumbo button. Play-Alone mode allows baby to explore the sounds and activities on the panel, or plug the console into the television and the panel connects wirelessly to interact with the animated learning environment they see on the screen. Designed for children from nine to 36 months old, V.Smile Baby teaches numbers, shapes, music, colors, animals--even baby sign language--all with the help of engaging Smartridges like the one included (others are sold separately). Three activity modes allow the system to grow, as parents and children find age-appropriate play. Measuring approximately 8 by 14 by 2-1/2 inches, the wireless panel proves perfectly lap-worthy, although we wish it included a handle for the inevitable toting around by toddlers. --Heather Lyndon

Scooby Doo - Funland Frenzy V.Smile Smartridge
Why is it that after all those cases where the ghost at the amusement park turned out to be the disgruntled security guard or other such human character, that the Scooby Doo gang never managed to figure out that they were not, in fact, being chased by a genuine other-worldly monster? Why didn't they simply yank the mask off the fake creature right at the beginning and save themselves a lot of hassle? Regardless of this logical inconsistency, Scooby Doo's popularity has never wavered and fans of the easily spooked Great Dane will enjoy this fun and educational game and activity set, built to be used with the V Smile system. Kids learn vocabulary, logic skills, numbers, math, and matching. While some of the games will be more challenging than others, depending on the child's aptitude, there is plenty of variety for everyone. --Charlie Williams

SmartVille Alphabet Train Station
The Alphabet Train Station packs a slew of activities for preschoolers, usually found in a combination of toys, into one fun-filled set. Toddlers learn their alphabet by moving the train around or pressing letters on the track to hear the letter and object spoken. Letters light up on the display panel for additional reinforcement. When kids get tired of that, they can place one of the 18 plastic animals in the Smart Parts spot to discover which animal they are and the sound they make. Still looking for more? Preschoolers can attempt some composing on the five-key piano or work on telling time by turning the hands on the station clock. As a last resort, kids can ignore all the electronic bells and whistles and just have some good old-fashioned creative play with the animals, the train track, and the seven role-play pieces. As with many Vtech toys, the Alphabet Train Station makes a lot of repetitive sounds that kids love but can get on parents' nerves. Thankfully, there is a volume control for quieter play. The toy comes with three short-term "AA" batteries for immediate play out of the box and an automatic shut-off feature kicks in if the station is left untouched for a few minutes. --Cristina Vaamonde

Bob the Builder V.Smile Smartridge
Young fans of the perennially popular Bob the Builder series will enjoy this entertaining cartridge compatible with the V Smile system. In fact, they'll probably have so much fun playing the various games and activities put forth by Bob and his pals that they won't even realize that they're learning about letters, colors, shapes, and counting. We appreciated how many different characters from the Bob series were involved as well as the non-competitive nature of the games. When the incorrect answer is selected, the blow is cushioned with enough encouragement to keep most kids happily playing. Can we learn it? Yes we can! --Charlie Williams
